1' Claim. (CL
This invention relates to plumbing fixtures or fittings and primarily to the construction of pop-up drains.
Pop-up drains, or more commonly pop-ups are used in lavaton'es and other types of sinks, usually comprising a body or T, aplug, a plunger and operating or actuating means including. a ball rod and lift rod. The usual plug may be wrought or cast and isprovided with a flange portion having a seat section which flange portion is chromium plated after the usual preliminary polishing operation, the plug being commonly called a P. O. plug.
Further the body or T and plug are preferably of brass to resist corrosion and make possible a bright chrome finish which necessitates considerable handling and relatively expensive construction, since certain portions are of material which is of better quality and higher costs than that which would perform equally wellin the particularlocation. V
The pop-up of this invention is constructed so as to obviate many of the above suggested problems and save manufacturing costs as well as assembly and mounting expense.
It is therefore a principal object of this invention to provide in pop-up construction a T or body having provision for and mounted thereon, actuating means, said body including a portion of the usual P. O; plug, a portion of the P. O. plug comprising the flange thereof having. the attributes of corrosion resistance and attractive finish without the usual plating or finishing operation being. performed thereon.
A further object of the invention is to provide a unique plunger member having a separate covering on the head thereof which may preferably be of non-corrosive material but in any event is relatively thin and applied to said head so as to enable finishing and plating thereof, without interfering with the closure function performed thereby.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pop-up in which the flange for mounting the same in a waste opening and usually a part of the P. O. plug, is a separate part preferably comprised of non-corrosive material, which enables not only simpler finishing operation if any be resorted to, but also facilitates installation of the fitting A further object of the invention supplementary to the foregoing is the provision of a flange or mounting member which is of composite construction having a threaded portion and a seat portion, either or both of which may be of non-corrosive material as stainless steel, and one of which may be suitably provided with the usually desired bright finish.
Other and further objects of the invention will be understood from a consideration of the specification appended hereto and shown in the drawing wherein:
Figure l is a view in vertical section through a pop-up embodying the construction of part of this invention.
Figure 2 is a view in elevation, a portion thereof being in section showing in separate detail the plunger of this invention.
Figure 3 is a view in perspective from below showing 2,827,639 Patented Mar. 25, 1958 ice the flange or mounting. member in accordance with this invention.
Referring now to Figure 1 the pop-up of this. invention is indicated at A as being mounted in. a waste opening of a sink, a portion of which is indicated at B the waste opening. being denoted 1.
The pop-up isof somewhat conventional construction in many aspects, particularly of course as far as the function thereof is concerned, the same being provided with a body usually denoted a- T indicated at 2, which T includes the outlet portion 3 thereon through which the waste water flows in theusual manner. The T 2 is further provided with the offstanding portion 4- in which is mounted and supported actuating means including a ball rod 5 having a ball 6' thereon which is seated against suitable packing 7 and maintained in place by the usual nut 8 provided, the nut 8 having the inclined surfaces 9 thereon for engagement by awasher 1-5 spring thrust in engagement with said-surfaces and maintained in position by a further washer 11 and cotter pin 12. The ball rod 5 is intended to be engaged at its end 13 with the usual lift rod, not shown, for pivotal movement about the center of the ball. previously mentioned.
The inner end or inwardly extending section of the ball rod 5 indicated at 15 engages the lower end of a plunger member 16 which member 16 includes the guides 17 and 18 and a lower hook connecting portion 19 all of. which are mounted on and extend from a stem 20.
The outer surface of the T or body 2 is provided with threads 21 thereon by means of which threads the device as a whole is mounted in the waste opening 1 previously mentioned, the same being maintained in position by means of a nut 22 provided therefore which nut 22 engages a washer 23 and a resilient sealing washer 24 so as to position the pop-up A in conjunction with a flange or mounting unit 25 to be more particularly described at this point and shown in bottom perspective in Figure 3.
As shown in Figure l the flange or mounting member 25 is a composite member comprising a core consisting of an outwardly extending flange 26" seated at the drain opening 1 and extending therealong, a threaded skirt 27 preferably integral with the flange 26 extending, downwardly from the flange and being provided with the threads 23 interiorly thereof so as to engage the threads 21 of the body 2.
The member 25 is further formed with a somewhat thinner seat and cover member 29 which is coextensive with the flange and partially coextensive interiorly of the skirt 27 down along and terminating above the end of the threads 28 as indicated at 30. This arrangement just last described, provides limiting means for thread engagement of the mounting member 25 as well as providing other attributes, which include that of being able to form the flange 26 and skirt 27 of relatively thick material which may or may not be of non-corrosive nature but is preferably so and preferably stainless steel, the seat and cover member 29 being formed of thinner material likewise of non-corrosive material and also preferably of stainless steel the outer periphery of the member 29 being rolled during manufacturing operation around the extreme periphery of the flange 26 so as to maintain the part 29 in engagement therewith.
It will be apparent in view of the above description that as explained the flange and skirt member 2627 may be of stainless steel of relatively heavy gage so to speak although it may also be of brass or the like which will afford some rigidity to the member. The part denoted the seat and cover member 29 being of thinner gage may be of stainless steel as explained and in conjunction with the part 26 and 27 afiord further rigidity as well as providing for bright finish to be applied to the in thewaste'opening 1.
part 29 there being no plating operation necessary since many kinds of stainless steel upon suitable buffing operation will produce a bright finish"; It should be further understood however that the'part'29 need not necessarily be of stainless steel but maybe of plastic or the like the part 26-27 attording the necessary rigidity and threads for engagement andpositioning of the device as a whole The above describes the member which is generally denoted the PVC); plug, and the pop-up body, which in this 'case are virtually one unit and arranged in separable fashion so as to enable the simple installation of the device as a Whole from beneath the Waste opening rather than the usualtprocedure resorted to by'the plumber of inserting the P. O. plug through the waste opening. That necessitated the manipulation of a nut such as 22 and washers 23 and 24 upwardly 'over the lower end of the said plug. definitely a time saving arrangement and enables the pro- 'vision of the body 2 in a die cast material if that be desired andtyet the corrosion resisting effect of the flange or mounting means is provided by the stainless steel or other'non-corrosive material which may be provided for the parts 26 and 27 and 29, V
In addition to the foregoing desirable arrangement wherein the parts 2627 and 29 are of non-corrosive ;or other material, a unique arrangement of the plunger 16 is provided wherein the head of the plunger denoted 32 at the upper end of the stem is of generally fiat construction hav ng a beveled outer periphery 33 thereon.
It will be apparent that the foregoing is tour of the outer surfaceof the head 32 extending over 7 the same and down around the beveled edge 33" being stretched in such atmanner so as to tightly engage the same and be maintained in position thereon, obviously the beveled edge enhancing the engagement'and maintaining of the cladding 34 thereon. L
It should be understood that whereas'the cladding I 34 may be of stainless steel it is obvious that it may also be of some other material such as plastic'or under some circumstances brass in cheap form could be applied thereto which obviates certain finishing operations and yet provides a basic finish for the application of chromium thereto. The provision of the part 34 in stainless steel overcomes the necessity for 'efiecting the usual chromium plating operation and yet a bright finish can be provided by suitable manipulation as'is well 7 known.
Asfwill be noted the head 32 may be applied to the stem 20 as by means'of connection shown at 36 so that further economy in manufacture may be effected, since the part 32 may be a, screw machine part whereas the plunger 16 as a Whole could be a rough casting of brass or other material and even perhaps a dieacasting of less expensive material than brass. a
