Description

(No Model.)
P. WHITE.-
HYDRA-NT.
Patented May 2'7, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETERXVHITE, OF LOUIS, MISSOURI.
HYDRUANT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,707, dated May 27, 1890.
Application filed May 20, 1889- Serial No. 311,440. (No model.)
substantially as is hereinafter set forth and claimed, aided by the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a streetwasher to which the improvement is applicable. Fig. 2 is a plan of the washer, the cover being removed, and the parts are as when the hydrant-valve is seated and locked. Fig. 3 is a similar plan, but showing the valve unlocked and the nozzle turned around to point to a different quarter; Fig. 4, a similar plan, but showing the parts as when thehydrant-valve is unseated and locked; Fig. 5, a
similar plan, the hydrant -valve being unseated and locked, but the nozzle pointing to another quarter. Fig. 6 is a vertical section on the line b 6 of Fig. 2, and Fig.7 a vertical section on the line 7 7 of Fig. 5. I
The same letters of reference denote the same parts.
The street-washer A, saving as it may be modified or supplemented by the presentimprovement, isof the usual description. valve-chamber is shown at a. The valve is not shown, as the improvement relates to the means for fastening the valve in either of its positions, and not to any special feature or features of the valve. 0 represents the box at the upper end of the washer for containing the nozzleB and the latch C. The nozzle is attached to the pipe D, Figs. 6 and 7, which leads within the casing E to the valve, and serves to deliver the water from the valve-chamber, and also as the rod by means of which the valve is seated and unseated. The nozzle is swiveled in the ordinary manner'to enable it to be pointed to any quarter.
The latch O and that part of the valve-rod with which it coacts is the novel feature of the construction. The latch is pivoted at c to some suitable bearing, such as the exten- Its.
sion f of the bushing F, which is fitted into the opening in the bottom of the box a, and
through which the valve-rod rises and falls in unseating and seating the valve to enable the free end 0 of the latch to be moved to ward and from the valve-rod, substantially as indicated by the two positions of the latch shown in Figs.2 and 3, respectively. hen the latch is turned in one direction, it is made to engage with the valve-rod and thereby to hold it from moving vertically, and when the latch is turned in the opposite direction it is disengaged from the valve-rod and the valverod is free to be raised and lowered. The most desirable mode of constructing the valve-rod so that the latch can be thus connected with and disconnected from it is as follows: The valve-rod is grooved at d, and its upper end forms a shoulder d. The groove cl is located upon the valve-rod, so that when the valve-rod is raised to unseat the valve the groove comes opposite the latch, and by turning the latch upon its pivot it can be made to engage with the groove, as shown in Fig. 7,
and thereby fasten the valve in its open position. Then the valve is seated, the shoulder d is just beneath the level of the latch, and by turning the latch on its pivot it can be made to come above the shoulder d, and thus hold the valve to its seat. The free end of the latch is shaped, as shown, to encircle the valve-rod when engaging in the groove (1, and to encircle the swivele d nozzle B when above the shoulder d, as shown, The latch is provided with a projection 0 suitably shaped for the application thereto of a wrench, by means of which the latch can be adjusted in its various described positions.
A flange a depends from the box-opening a and it is threaded for the casing F. to be screwed into the lower end thereof and the bushing to be screwed into the upper end thereof. The bushing is perforated centrally and smoothly for the valve-rod to be worked upward and downward therein snugly, by which means the valve-rod is guided centrally in the casing and dirt is prevented from falling from the box a downward into the casing.
I claim- The combination, with the casing E,having the valve-chamber at its lower end, of the box screwing to the upper end of the casing, the
bushing F, screwing into the part or neck w the bushing, and arranged to engage either [0 of the box, and having the extension f therethe groove (Z or the shoulder d, substantially in, the hollow valve-rod D, having an enas specified.
larged upper end surrounded by and rotata- \Vituessmyhand this 14th day of May, 1880. 5 ble in said bushing, which enlarged portion PFTER \VHITE has the circumferential groove (1, the nozzle swiveled to the upper end of the valve-rod W'itnesses:
and forming a shoulder (Z therewith, and the C. D. MOODY, hooked catch C, pivoted to the extension f of D. \V. A. SANFORD.
