Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. Hnss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver, State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to head gates and particularly that class utilized for controlling the flow of water from reservoirs, canals and the like where it is necessary that the supply of the consumer be limited to a certain quantity of water per day.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a head gate which includes improved means for connecting same with a pipe line leading from a water supply. 1
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a head gate which includes improved locking means for preventing the gate from being opened beyond a predetermined extent;
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In describingthe invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a head gate constructed in accordance with the invention, Fig. 2, a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3, a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4:, a view in elevation looking at the lower end of the inner side of the head gate and with the supply pipe disconnected therefrom, Fig. 5, an enlarged section on the line 5-5 of'Fig. 1, Fig. 6, a section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5,'Fig. 7, a section on the line 77 of Fig. 6, Fig. 8, a view similarto Fig. 7 with the locking lever of-the locking device disposed'so as to permit free move ment of the locking device longitudinally of the threaded gate rod, Fig. 9, a detail perspective view of a fragment of the threaded gate rod, Fig. 10, a detail perspective view of the locking lever of the locking device partly broken away, and having a less number of threads than are shown in Fig 6,

Referring to the drawings the gate is shown as comprising a pair of oppositely disposed uprights 15 and 16 of T-shaped cross section. The upper ends of the uprights15 and 16 are connected by a cross member 17 while the lower ends are adapted to be anchored upon any suitable base or to be suspended directly upon the discharge end of a conveying pipe line. Bolted against the- uprights 15 and 16 at'their lower ends is a plate 18 having an opening 19 therein. This plate 18 has its face adjacent the inner portion of the uprights 15 and 16 provided with a vertical groove 20 inwhich is slidably mounted a gate 21 adapted in its movement to cover and uncover the opening 19. Secured to the upper end of the gate 21 in any suitable manner is a vertical stem 22 having substantially an elliptical cross section and being provided throughout its upper portion with interrupted threads 23, said threads being lo cated at each end of the long transverse axis of the stem 22. Mounted upon the cross member 17 is a head block 24: in which is journaled a hand wheel 25, the latter having a threaded engagement with the threads 23 so that the rotation of'the hand wheel 25 will effect the raising and lowering of the gate 21 as will be apparent. The head block 24 is provided with a depending L-shaped arm 26 having an opening 27 in its free end.
The connection between the head gate and the conveying pipe line is formed by providing the inner face of theplate 18 with an annular flange 28 surrounding the opening 19 and receiving within same the discharge end of a pipe line 29. The discharge end of this pipe line 29 is enlarged to form a beveled shoulder 30, the enlarged end of the pipe line fitting snugly within the flange 28 while the beveled shoulder is disposed beyond the free edge of said flange. Projecting from the inner face of the plate 18 in spaced relation to the flange 28 at the top and bottom of the latter are fulcrum studs 35 and 38 as shown in Fig. 2. By
5 in a locking plate 35, the inner edge of which latter is beveled as at 36 for cooperation with the shoulder on the pipe line 29. The inner face of the locking plate is provided with a plurality of transverse grooves 37 which are adapted to selectively form seats for the free end of the fulcrumed stud 31. Also passing through the plate 18 and between the flange 28 and fulcrumed stud 32 is another draw bolt 38. i This last named bolt 38 also projects through an elongated opening in another locking plate 38, which latter is similar in every respect to the locking plate 35 and will therefore not be referred to in detail. In assembling the connection between the head gate and the conveying pipe line it is only necessary to seat the end of the pipe line within the flange 28 and then apply the locking plates screwing up the nuts on the bolts 33 and 38 the locking plates 35 and 38 will be fulcrumed on the studs 31 and 32 respectively so that their beveled ends coact with the shoulder 30 to draw the pipe line and head 30 gate firmly together. By seating the fulcrum studs 31 and 32 in different transverse grooves 37 of the locking plates 35 and 38 it will be apparent that the locking plates may be adjusted quickly and easily to efi'ecdiameters, such adjustment of the locking plate being permitted by the elongated opening 34.
In order to limit the opening movement of the gate to a predetermined degree there is slidably mounted upon the stem 22 a U- shaped member 40, said stem passing through the arms of said member and the lowermost arm of the member being longer than the upper arm. Disposed between the arms of the member 40 is a locking lever 41 having an enlarged end 42 provided with a cylindrical opening 43 encircling the stem 22. Formed on the inner face of the opening 43 are interrupted threads 44 adapted when the lever 41 is disposed in the position shown in Fig. 7 to engage with the in terrupted threads 23 on the stem 22 and lock said lever 41 and member 40 against movement longitudinally of the stem 22. The shape of the threads 44 however is such that when the lever 41 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 8 the threads 44 will pass out of engagement with the threads 23 and permit the lever 41 and the member 40 to be adjusted longitudinally of the stem 22. In order to secure the lever 41 against movement from the position shown in Fig. 7 there is pivoted on the free end of said lever a U-shaped member 45 which when then tively cooperate with pipes of diil'erent the purposes of the invention could be fulswung downwardly will embrace the lower arm of the member 40. This, lower arm of said member 40 is provided with an opening 46 in its free end in which is engaged a paddock 47 so that when the member 45 is swung to the position shown in Fig. 6 and the padlock applied the latter will secure the member 45 against movement that will disengage same from the lower arm of the member 40 and permit movement of the le ver 41 relatively to said member 40. It will be noted in this connection that the openings in the arms of the member 40 through which the stem 22 extends are elliptical so that said member is incapable of rotation upon the stem 22.
If desired the member 40 and the lever .41 may always be disposed in looking position at the base of the cross member 17. This is accomplished by swinging the member 45 over the lower horizontal arm of the L-shaped extension 26 and then applying the pad lock 47 in the opening 27.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that by adjusting the member 40 and lever 41 along the stem 22 that the opening movement of the gate 21 may be limited to any desired degree; the-member 40 being adapted to engage with the upper end of the gate frame and act-as a stop to etlect the desired limitation of said opening movement. WVhile in the preferred form of the invention, the stem 22 is shown provided with interrupted threads, it will be apparent that filled by simply providing said stem with transverse recesses opening laterally throughout their extent. It will therefore be noted that the scope of the invention is not limited to the employment of interrupted threads upon the stem 22. 1
What is claimed is: 1. The combination with a head gate having a stem provided with interrupted threads, of a stop member non-rotatably and slidably mounted on the stem a lever interlocking with the stop member and provided with an opening through which the stem extends, interrupted threads formed on the wall of said opening adapted to pass into and out of engagement with the threads on the stem as said lever is moved from one position to another, and means for locking said lever against movement to maintain the threads on the wall of the opening therein in engagement with the threads on the stem.
2. The combination with a head gate having a stem provided with interrupted threads, of a lever provided with an opening through which the stem extends, interrupted threads formed on the wall of said opening adapted to pass into and out of engagement with the threads on the stem as said lever is moved from one position to another, and means for locking said lever against movement to maintain the threads on the wall of the opening therein in engagement with the threads on the stem.
3. The combination with a head gate having a stem provided with interrupted threads, of a stop element adjustable on said stem, said element comprising a U-shaped member, non-rotatably and slidably mounted on the stem, a lever disposed between the arms of said U-shaped member and provided with an opening through which the stem extends, interrupted threads formed on the wall of said opening adapted to pass into and out of engagement with the threads on the stem as said lever is moved from one po- 'sition to another, and means for locking said lever against movement relatively to the U- shaped member to maintain the threads on the wall of the opening in the lever in engagement with the threads on the stem.
4. The combination with a head gate having a stem provided with interrupted threads, of a stop element adjustable on said stem, said element comprising a U-shaped member non-rotatably and slidably mounted on the stem, a lever disposed between the arms of said U-shaped member and provided with an opening through which the stem extends, interrupted threads formed on the wall of said opening adapted to pass into and out of engagement with the threads on the stem as said lever is moved from one position to another, a U-shaped bail pivoted on the free end of the lever adapted to embrace one of the arms of the U-shaped members to lock the lever against movement relatively to the U-shaped member and maintain the threads on the wall of the opening in the lever in engagement with thethreads.

5. The combination of a frame, a head gate slidably mounted on said frame, and having a stem provided with interrupted threads, a depending extension at the upper end of the frame, a lever provided with an opening through which the stem extends, interrupted threads formed on the wall of said opening adapted to pass into and out of engagement with the threads on the stem as said lever is moved from one position to another and means for locking the lever to the depending extension on the upper end of the frame to secure said lever against movement and thereby maintain the threads on the wall of the opening in the lever in engagement with the threads on the stem.
6. The combination with a head gate frame including a plate provided with an opening and a gate slidable across the outer face of said plate for controlling said opening of an annular flange on the inner face of said plate, fulcrum studs projecting from the inner face of said plates in spaced relation to said flange and on diametrically opposite sides of the latter respectively, looking plates pivoting on each of said fulcrum studs respectively, a pipe section having an enlarged end disposed within said flange, said enlarged end forming a shoulder engaged by said locking plates and draw bolts extending through said first named plate and said locking plates and between the flange and respective fulcrum studs for forcing the latter against the shoulder of the pipe section.
7. The combination with a head gate having a stem provided with a plurality of transversely disposed recesses, of a lever provided with an opening through which the stem extends and whereby said lever is rotatably and slidably mounted upon the stem, a projection on the wall of the opening in the lever adapted to pass into and out of a given recess in the stem as said lever is rotated from one position to another and means for locking said lever against rotation on the stem to maintain the projection on the wall of the opening in the lever disposed in a given recess on the stem.
