Description

to which my invention relates to make and UNITED STATES ROBERT GRAY SMEATON,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOP-COCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,489, dated November 2, 1875i application filed September 26, 1874. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT GRAY SMEA- TON, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Stop- Oocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to stop-cocks generally used by plumbers where water is carried into buildings through pipes, the stop-cock being placed in connection with the water-pipe under the basement-floor, or in the ground, as the case requires, and a rod having a wrench upon the end is generally attached to the plug, or engages the top of the same. The rod then passes up through the different stories of the building, so that the occupants of the same can turn the water on or off at their convenience, this being necessary in the winter to prevent the water from freezing in the pipe. When the stopcock is closed the water above the cock is allowed to pass out of the pipe into the waste.
It is plain to be seen that by this manner of operating the plug to' a stop cook the weight of the rod is entirely upon. the plug. For this reason it requires but a little time to wear the plug to such an extent that the expense of a new one is necessary.
My invention consists in constructing a tween the prongs, to allow the head of the v plug B to enter the same loosely, the prongs O resting on shoulder A, and preventing the wrench from resting on the plug B D, rod
by which the wrench is turned, and, with it, plug B; D, a socket in the wrench, into which This cock is designed to be placed below the post, and the rod D made to pass up through the different stories of a house, and consequently the rod will be of considerable weight,
and if the cock were not protected by the prongs C it would soon wear out.
I claim as my invention- Cock A, with shoulder A, plug B, wrench B, with prongs O resting on shoulder A, in combination with rod D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
The above specification signed by me this 16th day of September, 1.874.
ROBERT GRAY sMEAToN.
