SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,087, dated October 3, 1893.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that We, JAMES M. ADKINS and ROBERT C. BERRY, citizens of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock Stop-Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our said invention is to produce a stop cock which shall be looked in the desired position, and thus prevented from being moved from that position until it is unlocked.
A stop cock embodying said invention will be first fully described, and the novel features thereof then pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, vFigure 1 is a central. vertical sectional view of a stop cock provided with our said invention; Fig. 2 an under side plan View of the handle thereof containing the lock bolt; Fig. 3 a detail transverse sectional View, on an enlarged scale, on the dotted line 3 3 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 a detail horizontal sectional view, also on an enlarged scale, on the dotted line 4 et in Figs. 1 and 3.
In said drawings the portions marked A represent the body of the device; B the valve or gate; C lthe handle; D the lock bolt, and E the rock shaft for operating said lock bolt.
The parts A and B are or may be of any ordinary or desired construction. As shown, the part A has a bushing A', which, as Well as the part B, is of brass, While the part A is preferably of iron. On the upper side of the part A is an annular seat to receive an annular liange c of the handle C, and also a socket for the point of the lock bolt D, as shown in Fig. 1. The valve B has a spring S by which it is held up into close relation with the valve seat.
The handle C is fitted onto the stem B of' the valve or gate B, to which it may be secured by means of a pin or bolt b. This stem and the hole in the handle which passes over it, are preferably square, although they may be round, hexagon, Octagon, orA any other desired shape. Within the handle B are also formed recesses or perforations to receive the lock bolt D and'its operating mechanism, and
over the open ends of the perforation for the bolt, We place a cover C', usually mounted on a hinge pivot c.
The lock bolt D is preferably a round bolt seated in a perforation in the under side of the handle C, as shovvnfr'nostV plainly'n Fig. 1, and behindsra'id Vbolt isa spring d, which forces it outward and into engagement with the socket or perforation provided for that purpose in the top of the part A. It has a mortise centrallylocatedwtherein by means of which it may be manipulated by-a key or wrench.
The shaft E passes transversely through the handle C, and carries an arm E which extends out and enters the mortise in the lock bolt D, and, by this means, as said shaft is rocked, the bolt may be raised. The perforation extending transversely through the handle C should be round,in order to permit the parts to rock therein, and, in lorder to provide a well iitting bearing, bushings e are fitted over the ends of the shaft alongside of the hub of the arm E', as shown most plainly in Figs. 3 and 4. These t closely onto said shaft E, and also within the transverse perforation in the handle C. The ends of the shaft E are shown as extendingiout somewhat beyond the bushings, and as being square, thus providing convenient meansl of attachmentfor the key or socket Wrench by which the lock may be manipulated. Other forms of keys or wrenches may be used instead if desired. The ends are also shown as slotted to receive a flat key.
Our said invention is especially applicable to places Where it is important that the cock be held in the position it is left, withoutdanger of accidental change of position. It operates as follows: When the handle is swung around to the desired position, the bolt D drops into the socket in the part A, as shown in Fig. 1, and thus, as will be readily understood, the parts are locked to that position, u'ntil purposely disengaged. When it is desired to `change it, a key or wrench is placed on the end of the shaft E, and it is turned so that the arm E will lift the bolt D and disengage it from the socket in the part A,When the handle may be swung around to any desired point, where the bolt may engage with another socket in the part A, thus holding it to that position.
Having thus fully described our said invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, in a lock stop-cock, of the main portion A, the valve partB therein, the handle D secured upon said Valve part, the lock bolt D mounted in said handle portion C and adapted to engage with a suitable perforation in the main part A, the shaft E also mounted in the handle, and having an arm E which extends out and engages with the lock bolt D, whereby, when said shaft is operated, said bolt will be raised out of engagement with said perforation, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, in alock stop-cock, of the main part A having a perforation for a lock bolt, a valve part B mounted in said main part, a handle C mounted upon said i valve part and having a perforation, a lock bolt D mounted in said perforation, a spring d inserted behind said lock bolt, a rock shaft E having an arm for operating said lock bolt, and bushings e mounted on said shaft on each side of said arm, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination, in a lock stop-cock, of the main part A, the valve part B mounted therein, a handle C secured to said valve, a perforation in said handle, a lock-bolt mounted in said perforation, a second perforation in said handle extending through from side to side, a shaft located in said perforation and provided with an arm extending outand engaging with the lock-bolt, and a cover mounted on said handle and adapted to cover the ends of said perforation, all substantially as shown and described.
