EDMUND Gr. STOLTZ, OF GRANITE CITY, ILLINOIS.
CLOSET FLUSH-VALVE.
neeaves.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 6, 1920.
Application filed J'une 3, 1919. Serial 110. 301,397.
To ail whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND G. Srorrrz, a
citizen of the United States, residing at' Granite City, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Closet Flush-Valve, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to closet flush valves and has for its object to provide a valve that is practically free from the objection able noise usually present in valves of this class.
A further object is to provide anovel means for positively maintaining a full valve opening during the outflow from the tank.
Another object is to provide a valve closure that may be readily removed. for the purpose of inspection and repair.
It is also within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With these and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel arrangement and combination of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the. appended claim, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
The drawing illustrates in side elevation with parts in section a flush valve constructed in accordance with the present invention. 1
Referring specifically to the drawing there shown at 1 ordinary flush tank having the outlet pipe 2. Secured to the top of the outlet pipe is a val e seat 3, having t incl integrally therewith a collar 4; or reception oi an overflow pipe a the valve in open position.
overflow pipe 5 has secured thereto preferably-screw threaded to the rod as shown. A valve 1 1 is secured to the end of the rod 12 below the lower arm and is supplied with the usual rubber gasket or washer 15, the same being adapted to seat on the valve 3 to close the same, A coil spring 16 surrounds the rod 12, being interposed between the lower arm 10 and the valve 14 and is under slight compression when the valve is closed.
An arm 1'7 extends from the boss 11 on the lower arm 10 and has a bifurcated end 18 to which is pivoted a lever 19. The said lever carries at its outer end a float 20. The opposite end 21 of the lever is adapted to engage the abutment 13 to hold the valve in open position, the engaging end of the lever being arcuately shaped. A shoulder 22 on the bifurcated end of the arm 17 serves as a stop to prevent the buoyancy of the float 2O lowering the end 21 of the lever below a point to engage the abutment 13.
The rod 12 is provided at its upper end with a lever 23 for lifting the valve from the valve seat and is the usual structure employed for this purpose.
in operation, with the tank filled, on lifting the rod 12, the abutment 13 will strike the lever 19 and pass by the same, the buoyancy of the float 20 will cause the end 21 to seat under the abutment 13, supporting As the water in the tank flows out, the float lowers, raising the end 21 of the lever until the abutment is released and the valve closes, the spring 16 exerting sufiicient pressure on the valve to seal the same. In the present invention. a highly eficient valve is produced, chattering and noisy valve action are prevented by positive engagement of the valve stem by the lever 19, a full valve opening is maintained until the charge of Water is released, and not only is leakage of the valve prevented by the additional pressure exerted on the valve by the spring 16 when the valve is closed, but when the valve is open the spring exerting pressure on the valve tends to hold the abutment in engagement with the lever 21 to prevent rattling of the same. The backing plate of the valve 14; may be made of brass or other non-corrosive metal and prevents crimping of the thin feather edge of the rubber gasket 15.
hat is claimed is In a device of the class described, a flush tank having an outlet, a lever, a bracket Whereon the lever is fulcrumed intermedi ate its ends, a float on the outer end of the lever, the bracket including a part cooperating with the inner end of the lever to limit the downward movement thereof under the buoyant action of the float, a stem under the control of an operator and slidable in the bracket, a valve carried by the stem and controlling the outlet, a spring carried by the stem and exerting pressure on the valve, and an oval shaped abutment on the stem and engaging the inner end of the lever to hold the valve in open position When the inner end of the stem cooperates with said part of the bracket, the inner end of the thereby releasing the valve for downward movement.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
EDMUND e. CTOLTZ,
\Vitnesses TI-ros. RUTLEDGE, JAMES SHEARER.
