Abstract
540,794. Closet seats. MIKETTA, C. A. April 20, 1940, No. 7169. [Class 26] [Also in Group XXV] In a water closet having a hinged seat and cover, a water supply line and flushing valve, is provided with a member movable under the influence of the water supply and connected to the seat and cover, so as to permit the seat or cover or both to close when the pressure in the water supply line is reduced by the opening of the flushing valve. The movable member comprises a device 10 connected by a pipe 11 to the supply pipe 4 connected to a cistern 5 provided with a flushing handle 6. The device 10 comprises a housing separated by a partition 11<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, to form cylinders in which move plungers 12, 12<SP>3</SP> the lower ends of which are provided with cup leathers 14 held in place by screws 15. Mounted in the upper part of the device 10 are shafts 17, 18 in the form of hollow tubes, the shaft 18 being rotatably mounted in the shaft 17, and terminating at 18<SP>1</SP>, the shaft 17 extending through bearings 19, 20 formed in the upper ends of bolts 29, 22 extending through the bowl 1. The cover 3 is connected to the shaft 17 by the bracket 27 and by the bracket 27<SP>1</SP> to the shaft 18 and the seat 2 to the shaft 17 by a bracket 28<SP>1</SP> and to the shaft 18 by a bracket 28. Cams 30, 31 provided with curved faces 32, flat faces 33 and flat faces 34 are mounted in the shafts 17, 18, the latter shaft terminating within the device at about its mid-point To place the plungers 12, 13 in the operative position, a handle 36 extends through the shaft 17 being provided with a pin 37 which extends through a slot 38 in the shaft. The end of the shaft 18 is notched at 39 the pin 37 being sufficiently long to engage the edges of the notch. With the plungers 12, 13 in the position shown in Fig. 2, the handle 36 is rotated and by means of the pin 37 partially rotates the shaft 17. The cam 30 is rotated slightly into the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 4 and the pressure of water from the supply line 4 and the conduit 11 causes the plunger 13 to move upwardly thus raising the cover 3. If it is also desired to raise the seat 2, the handle 36 is rotated a little more, thus causing the pin 37 to engage the notch 39 and thus partly rotate the shaft 17 to operate the cam 31 and thus turn the shaft 18 to raise the seat. As soon as the flushing valve 6 is actuated, a reduction in pressure in the conduit 11, due to the flow of water to the bowl 1, as well as in the space between the plungers 12, 13 is caused, and springs 43, 44 tend to return the cams 30, 31 to their original positions. The weight of the cover and seat then rotates the shafts 17, 18, rotates the cams 30, 31 and depresses the plungers 12, 13. When the cams return to their original position, Fig. 4, the face 34 contacts the plungers and holds the seat and cover in the closed position. The pipe 11 is screwed into a part 61, Fig. 9, by means of a nut 65, the part 61 being provided with a flared opening.
