Abstract

368,292. Couplings and undercarriages for railway vehicles. NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE CO., Ltd. and BLACK, J., 110, Flemington Street, Spring- burn, Glasgow. Nov. 19, 1930, No. 34772. [Classes 103 (v) and 103 (vi).] Pivot mountings for articulated locomotives and vehicles are characterized by a split bush ring presenting a wearing surface in contact with the pivot rim, with provision for applying pressure to the ring in a manner to effect adjustment thereof to take up slack due to wear. The pivot rim or male member of the joint comprises a coned circular member A<1> integral with the main frame cross stretcher A and adapted to receive a flanged wearing disc B secured thereto by pins C allowing the rotary setting to be altered to compensate for wear. The under surface of the disc B may be flat or part-spherical and a supporting plate P of like shape may be provided to take the weight. Oil grooves may be provided on the rubbing surfaces. Between the rim B and the vertical walls of the socket or base member D is interposed an adjustable split ring E which is held down and restrained from rotation by angle brackets L, M secured to the base by pins N, O. Pressure may 'be applied automatically to the split bush ring E by a spring- pressed block F slidable through an opening in the baseplate and having a stem F<1> slidable in a frame G carried by screwed studs J, the spring being placed in compression between end washers H. In a modification shown in Fig. 6 (the upper and lower halves of which show respectively the positions before and after wear has taken place) a part-circular seating block R on the opposite side of the pivot to the spring-pressed block is adjustable by means of screws S to enable the position of the pivot centre to be maintained. The thrust after adjustment is taken by the insertion of packing shims T, Fig. 14, after which the screws, which are shaped as shown in Fig. 15, are slackened off. In a further modification, the spring-pressed block is dispensed with, part-circular seating blocks R adjustable by means of screws S being, in this case, arranged on each side of the pivot. The inner side of the split ring E may be provided with renewable facing strips secured by spot welding or otherwise.
