[Class 5 (i).] In a machine for slicing, more particularly for loins and chops, the knife is in the form of a helical spiral and the faces of the knife are inclined with respect to the axis of the helix. This arrangement ensures that the thickness of the slice cut is less than the distance between the convolutions of the blade, and jamming is thereby avoided. As shown in Fig. 1, the knife 15 is mounted on a shaft 10 and the meat is fed along a tube 16 which may be arranged at an angle to the knife to ensure that the cut is transverse to the meat: The severed portions fall on a discharge belt 17. In Fig. 4, the pitch of the knife is adjustable to vary the slice thickness, this being effected by securing the knife in the convolutions of a coil spring 21 which is kept always under compression by an abutment ring 28. This ring carries a pinion 26 having a square hole 29 engageable by an operating tool. The pinion engages with teeth 25 on a sleeve 24 which is screwed into a member 22 carrying the spring 21. In order to ensure that the adjustment is uniform along the whole of the knife edge, the spring 21 is made weaker as the knife becomes stronger so that the resistance to flexure is uniform along the whole knife. The knife may be made in one or more portions. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes modifications wherein the plane of the knife sides varies in its inclination to the knife axis and the knife does not comprise a whole convolution of the helix. This renders a positive feed mechanism necessary, the feed being effected by a clamp integral with a nut on a feed screw or slidable on a bar by a yoke operated by the feed screw. The meat is fed towards the knife at an angle to the knife axis. Two short straight blades approximating to a helix are also described. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
