This invent-ion is directed to an improved slicing implement constructed primarily for convenient and simple adjustment to readily and accurately p-redetermine the thickness of the slices to be cut.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a slicing implement including a frame and a blade, with the frame providing a guiding surface for the material to be operated on and the blade connected to the frame by means providing for accurate and simple adjustment of the blade relative to the guiding surface of the frame to thereby predetermine the thickness of the resultant slices.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the improved slicing implement.
Figure 2 is a section on line A-B of F igure 1.
Figure 3 is a broken longitudinal section on the line C-D of Figure 1, illustrating particularly the blade or knife adjusting means.
The slicing implement of this invention comprises a frame 1, preferably of metal, having a main length with laterally extended ends 12 and 13 which are slightly offset from the plane of the main length of the frame, as indicated in Figure 2, in one of which, as 12, is designed to be received an extension 2 forming a handle for the implement. The blade 3 is an elongated section of substantially uniform width throughout, the end portions of which are formed with slots 11, the length of which is at right angles to the length of the blade.
The blade is adjustably secured to the frame through the medium of bushes 5 having reduced ends to slidably fit the slots 11, the blade being fixed with respect to the bushes through the medium of bolts 4 having heads to overlie the blade and threaded shanks to cooperate with threaded bores in the bushes 5.
The bushes 5 are exteriorly threaded for cooperation with a threaded bore in an adjusting element 6. These elements 6 are rotatably mounted in openings in the lateral extensions 12 and 13 of the frame and are 50 formed beyond the frame with an annular flange 14 which overlies and bears on the surface of the frame and is seated in an undercut opening in a ring 7 secured to the frame preferably by threaded studs. Thus, the adjusting element 6 at each end of the blade will on rotative movement move the bushes axially of the adjusting element, and as the ends of the blade are carried by the bushes, the blade will be correspondingly moved toward and from the ends l2 and 13 of the frame.
As previously stated, the ends 12 and 13 of the frame are offset from the plane of the main length of the frame and that surface of the frame underlying the blade constitutes a plane guiding surface for the material to be sliced. The blade throughout its length intermediate the slots 11 is cut away on the inner surface to thereby provide a lower cutting edge in a plane offset from the plane of the extensions 12 and 13 and substantially overlying the material guiding surface 9.
Obviously, if the adjusting elements are operated to arrange the cutting edge 8 of the blade substantially in the plane of the material guiding surface 9 of the frame, the slices cut from the material moved over the guiding surface or relative thereto through the movement of the implement will be comparatively thin and these slices may be increased in thickness by obvious adjustment of the elements 6 to vary the distance between the plane of the cutting edge 8 and the plane of the guiding surface 9.
The slices cut 'by the cutting edge of the blade pass to the opposite side of the blade 35 Wholly free of the frame and may be delivered without pressure or obstruction. The slots 11 provide for accurate adjustment of the blade toward and from the proximate edge of the guiding surface 9 of the frame and, if desired, it is apparent that the slots 11 may be open at one end to faciliate complete removal of the blade when necessary for sharpening or repair and without the necessity of completely disconnecting the screw 4. This detail is not necessary to illustrate, as it is a conventional arrangement.
