[Class 103 (i).] In a fluid friction vibration damper or brake, relatively movable surfaces, maintained close to but without touching one another a definite distance apart, are retarded by the presence, between them of a viscous substance. As applied to a vehicle shock-absorber, Fig. 1, arms a<3>, g are pivoted to one another and to the frame and axle respectively, a closed casing a2 being: rigid with the arm a<3> while the arm g is keyed to the spindle c. A series of metal discs b, d spaced a small but definite distance apart, are connected alternately to the casing a<2> and the spindle c so as to oscillate therewith, the relative movements of the discs being retarded by the viscous liquid with which the casing is. filled. The surfaces may be discontinuous, as shown in Fig. 4, so. that the overlapping area varies according to the position. The spindle c may be elastic to allow some yielding. Thedevice is applicable also to speed regulation in machinery or to hoisting apparatus.
