Vibration-dampers of the type in which frictional discs 6 are interposed between pivoted arms 4, 5 connected to the frame and axle of a motor vehicle are provided with an auxiliary load spring 12 by means of which the apparatus may be calibrated to give accurate readings of pressure whatever the wear which has taken place. The usual load spring 8 is disposed at one side and a rigid cup 7 enclosing the auxiliary spring 12 at the other, the parts being clamped together by the central bolt 3 and nut 10. A spring pointer 11, rotatable with the nut 10, is movable over markings on the cup 7. During assembly, the auxiliary spring 12 holds the rim of the cup away from the adjacent arm 5 until the nut 10 forces it down, the spring 12 at this point exerting a definite known pressure. During this operation the pointer 11 engages the stop 14 and causes the rotation of the cup. As soon as the cup stops, the pointer 11 springs over the stop 14 and is then opposite the numeral representing the pressure exerted by the auxiliary spring 12. Further rotation of the nut 10 loads the main spring 8 without any further rotation of the cup 7 and without applying any further load to the auxiliary spring.
