Abstract
303,912. Horstmann, S. A., and Horstmann, Ltd. July 12, 1927. i Springs, arrangement of; axles.-In spring suspension systems of the kind in which relative movements of frame and axle are controlled by radius or torque members and by an elastic member of variable inclination, the parts are so proportioned that the vertical supporting component becomes a greater proportion of the force exerted by the elastic member as the load is increased. The axle 3, Fig. 1, carries a bracket 8 which is connected to the frame 1 by a rigid radius rod 9 and by an elastic member 4 which is substantially shorter than the radius rod. In a modification, the radius rod is replaced by a torque member 9, Figs. 7 and 8, and the axle is split longitudinally, as shown at 10, to allow it to twist when one wheel rises or falls more than the other relatively to the frame. Twist of the axle may be avoided as shown in Fig. 9 by connecting the radius rods to a bracket 11 on the axle, by means of rubber buffers 13 of ring shape. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the mechanism is arranged transversely and the axle 7 forms the radius rod, being pivoted to the casing 8 on the vehicle frame. The elastic member 4 is pivoted to the brake anchorage 6 and to the end of a transverse frame member 11. A torque and radius member 8 extends diagonally forwards.
