RAILWAY-MOTOLE. MOUNTING.
Application filed October 6, 1920. Serial No. 415,048.
To all whom it may concern):
Be 1t known that I, BENJAMIN S. Moonn,
. a citizen of the United States, and a resident V of VVilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny 5 and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Railway: Motor Mountings, of which the following is a specification. 2
My invention relatesto railway motor mountings and it has particular relation to mountings of the above indicated character wherein a twin motor is arranged to straddle and be supported by a main driving axle of a railway vehicle.
Heretofore, it has been customary to mount a twin railway motor at a distance above the driving axle. A driving connection between the motor pinion and the drive wheel is effected by means of a spur gear which is carried by a quill or hollow shaft which surrounds the driving axle and is resiliently connected to the driving wheel by means of a plurality of coil springs.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a motor of the abovein.dicated character designed to so straddle the driving axle that the pinions thereof shall engage the driving'spur gear at diametrically opposedpoints, thus materially reducing the vertical space occupied by the motor and simplifying the construction and driving connections thereof.
Another object of my invention is to provide a motor of the above indicated character, the individual motor casings of which may be integrally connected and supported by a connecting yoke portion and, at the same time, to provide resilient means for absorbing the torque of the motor.
4.0 With such objects in view, as well as other advantages which may be incident to the utilization of the improvement, the invention consists in the parts and combinations thereof hereinafter set forth and claimed, with the understanding that the several necessary elements constituting .the same may be varied in proportion and arrangements without departing from the nature and scope of the invention.
In order to make the invention more clearly understood. means are shown in the accompanying drawing for carrying the same into practical effect, without limiting the improvements, in their useful applications,
,55 to the particular constructions which, for the purpose of explanation, are made the subject of illustration.
The single figure of the accompanying drawing is a side elevation of a motor casing and mounting therefor, embodying my invention, one of the driving wheels being" removed.
Referring to the drawings, a twin motorl, comprising individual motor casings 2 and 3, preferably integrally connected at their upper portions by means of a yoke member 4, is resiliently supported upon a driving axle 5, of a wheel 6 by means of a bearing 7 and interposed: coil springs 8. Each motor is provided with the usual driving pinions 9 which mesh with and drive at diametrically opposed points, a spur gear 10 fixed to the driving axle 5.
The motor casing is provided with lugs or extensions 11 which form a support for a plurality of shock-absorbing coil springs 12,
the upper extremities of which engage transverse'members 13 of the truck frame structure 14.
By this arrangement, a twin motor may be resiliently mounted for direct driving connection in a relatively small space. Fur
thermore, the rather complicated resilient driving connection heretofore utilized is avoided, as the entire motor casings may rock about the axle, according to the torque of the motors, and such oscillatory movement is resiliently retarded by means of the shock-absorbing springs 12.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. The combination with a driving axle of an electric vehicle, of a motor mounting comprising a plurality of individual motor casings having a connecting yoke portion therefor, and means for yieldably supporting said casing for vertical movement upon said driving axle with the axes of the motors substantially diametrically opposed with respect to the driving axle.
. 2. A railway-motor mounting comprising a plurality of individual motor casings having an integral connecting yoke portion therefor, and means for so yieldably supporting said casing upon a driving axle that the axes of the motors will be substantially diametrically opposed with respect to the driving axle.
3. The combination with a driving axle of an electric vehicle, of a motor mounting comprising a plurality of individual motor casings having a yoke portion therefor, means for yieldably supporting said casing for vertical movement upon said driving axle With the axes of the motors substantially oppositely opposed with respect to the driving axle, and means for yieldably maintaining said casing against rotative movement about said drivng axle.
4. A twin-motor mounting for electric vehicles comprising, in combination, a plurality of individual motor casings having a connecting yoke portion therefor, a driving axle, a motor bearing carried by said axle and adapted for sliding engagement with the sides of said casings.
5.- A twin-motor mounting for electric vehicles having, in combination, an axle, a motor bearing carried thereby, a motor casing, spring means interposed between said casing and said bearing, said motor casing comprising a plurality of individual motor casingshaving a connecting yoke portion and so arranged that the axes of the motors are diametrically opposed With respect to said axle, a gear on said axle, co-operating pinions on said motors, and yieldable means for absorbing the torque of the motors.
6. A railway-motor mounting having in combination, a plurality of individual motor casings having an integrally connecting yoke portion therefor, and adapted to be so suspended upon a driving axle that movement between said casings and said axle will be maintained in a direction normal to a plane passing through the axes of the motors.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 22nd day of September, 1920.
BENJAMIN S. MOORE.
