Dans les bogies connus à différentiel mécanique, l'ensemble des organes qui assurent la transmission du mouvement entre un moteur et les roues corespondantes se trouve rassemblé dans une poutre porteuse, appelée généralement "pont réducteur différentiel", qui assure simultanément les fonctions de support de la charge, d'entraînement du bogie et de transmission du couple moteur. L'emploi d'un tel pont réducteur différentiel conduit à une structure dans laquelle le cadre et les suspensions du bogie sont disposés entre les roues de roulement et l'axe longitudinal du bogie. Il entraîne la présence de masses non suspendues vis-à-vis de la voie importantes (pont réducteur, transmissions, organes de freinage, moteur).
