Abstract

784,387. Dynamic vibration dampers. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. May 2. 1956 [May 31. 1955], No. 13540/56. Class 108(3) A vibration damper comprises a cylindrical mass 20 resiliently maintaining between the ends of a cylinder 12 and having between the outside surface of the mass and inside surface of the cylinder. a clearance for viscous liquid, which is in the form of a thin film on the wall of the cylinder. and which acts in shear to damp oscillation of the mass 20 A passage 22 through the mass 20 prevents damping due to compression of air within the cylinder 12. Rubber buffers 38, 40, are provided to cushion extreme deflection of the mass 20. Only a small quantity 32 of the viscous liquid is provided. This may be a silicone liquid or high viscosity oil. The dimensions of a damper suitable for mounting on a steerable or non-steerable vehicle road-wheel, are given. The damper is mounted as near the outermost extremity of the wheel as is possible.
