[Class 99 (ii).] In a cable &c. drum, the barrel portion B consists of a number, preferably four, of pairs of members C<1> which are hinged together at their inner ends and are connected at their outer ends to pivots D on the flange members so that the drum may be collapsed for transport, and the said pivots D are movable on the flanges so that the diameter of the barrel portion may be varied. The flanges comprise annular rims A, A<1> and two pairs of diametrically disposed arms C of angle iron between which the outer ends of the members C<1> are disposed ; these may be further strengthened by arms L and metal plates E in the sectors between the arms C. The arms C are each provided with holes D<1> at varying distances from the axis of the drum to receive the pivots D of the members C<1>; alternatively the outer ends of the said members C<1> are formed with an internally threaded boss F to receive a traversing screw G disposed between the arms C, the several screws G being rotated to vary the diameter of the barrel by a central bevel wheel K and pinion J. The barrel is preferably completed by segmental pieces of wood bolted to the arms C<1> or by sheet metal, and a U -bolt may be provided on the inner side of one of the said arms to receive the end of the cable. Lagging boards N may be secured to the periphery ot the flange members by an iron band &c. or by bands of channel iron O mounted on the flanges to form a cover for the cable.
