Abstract

726,704. Cable drums. FORGE-CRAFT (WOOD GREEN), Ltd. Oct. 23, 1953 [March 23, 1953], No. 7910/53. Class 99 (2). Tubular metal rims 1, 2 are joined to a hub member, e.g. a hollow cylindrical axle 3 having laterally-spaced, solid or perforated side flanges 4, by tubular metal spokes and some of the spokes 5 run continuously from one rim to the other and curve inwardly to meet the hub member or a part connected to that member. The inwardly curved portions 6, 7 of the spokes 5 flex to take up any shocks imposed on the drum, and the median portions of those spokes lie substantially parallel to the axle 3 to form a core around which the cable is wound. As shown, the rims 1, 2 are spaced further apart than are the flanges 4, and the space between the rims is subdivided by tubular members 8 for the purpose of locating a small portion of the cable. A notched portion 13 is provided in the rim 1 for securing the end of the cable, and tool-boxes 14 are attached to the flanges 4. In modifications, (a), Fig. 3 (not shown), the rims 1, 2 are attached to a hub by radial spokes, there being alternate interconnecting spokes 5 running radially inwards towards additional inner, tubular rims secured to the radial spokes, and a cylindrical, sheet metal core surrounding the spokes 5 and connected at its peripheral edges to annular, sheet metal side flanges secured to the rims 1, 2, and (b), Fig. 4 (not shown), there are subsidiary rims axially inward of and secured to the rims 1, 2 and forming with annular side flanges grooves to receive lagging boards which are passed through. a side slot in one of the grooves.
