[Class 78 (v).] In a lamp equipped with raising and lowering gear, with or without traversing gear, a separable joint or electric coupling is provided between the lamp and the gas or electric supply comprising a lower joint-forming or contact element movable with the lamp and an upper co - operating floatingly - arranged element connected to the supply and adapted to participate, within limits, in the hoisting and lowering movements of the lamp, the upper element being adapted, when the lamp is in operative position, to be maintained in engagement with the lower element under the influence of a load acting thereon. In one form, the lamp carrier 8 is supported by a carriage 1, adapted to be moved along a stretched cable 2 by means of a cable 23, and carries one part 7 of a ball-andsocket joint, the other part 6 being carried by a casting 4, connected with a gas supply pipe 3 and adapted, when the lamp is lowered, to be supported from the cable 2 by means of a stirrup 5. On raising the lamp by means of a cable 9, the parts 6, 7 engage and the casting is raised. Pins 14 on the carrier are arranged to enter cam tracks 10 in the wings of the carriage and, on slightly lowering the lamp, slide into pockets 19 in the tracks and support the carrier and casting. On further raising and then slightly lowering the carrier, the pins 14 pass through and emerge from similar cam tracks 10<1>, whereupon the carrier can be lowered. Alternatively, the pins may be provided on the wings and the cam tracks on the carrier 8. The casting 4 is provided with two depending fins 29 adapted to guide the member 8 and lock the carriage in the normal position. In a second form, the ball 6, Fig. 7, engages the lower end of a cylinder 43 slidable in a split cylindrical bracket 44 carried by an arm 45 from a post 46, and is connected to a pipe 47 connected by a pipe 48 and a universal joint 49 to a gas pipe 50 within the post. When the lamp is lowered, the cylinder 43' is supported by a shoulder 52 resting on a ledge 51.
