[Class 78 (v).] In lamps provided with raising and lowering gear, with or without traversing gear, and with means for making and breaking a gas or electric connection by the act of moving the lamp into and out of position, a spring-urged joint element 10 is provided on the lamp-carrier for engaging a mating joint element 9 in the fixed supporting casing 5 so that the lamp-carrier can be raised above the normal suspended position to permit the connection and disconnection of suspension means 17, 18. The element 10 is attached to a spring-pressed tube 11 slidable through a stuffing-box 12 in a casting 13 connected by a tube 14 to the lamp-carrier (not shown). The hoisting rope 2 is anchored at one end 4 to the casing 5, or traversing carriage, and passes under a pulley on the lamp-carrier and over a pulley 6. On raising the lamp to make the gas &c. joint, a gapped flange 15 on the casting 13 passes over pins 17 in the casing 5 and a ring 18 on the casting is rotated in one direction by the pins 17 engaging the sloping edges 21 of tongued elements 19 thereon and then backwardly by the pins engaging the sides 22 of teeth 20. The lamp is then lowered slightly and the pins strike the inclined undersides 24 and engage in the notches 25 of the elements 19 to support the lamp. To disconnect the lamp, it is first slightly raised and then lowered, the ring 18 being rotated by each pin 17 engaging first the inclined side of the tooth 20 below it and then the inclined side 26 of the corresponding element 19. Alternatively, the pins 17 may be provided on a ring 18, the co-operating parts 19, 20 being fixed in the casing. For making a temporary gas connection to the lamp in the lowered position, a spider, fitted with a central rubber-covered nozzle for engaging in the element 10, is secured over the casting 13 by pins engaging under the flange 15.
