[Class 17 (ii).] In material of the kind comprising layers of rubber , guttapercha, & c., and layers of canvas, leather, fibre, &c., in which the wearing surface of the material is formed by the edges of the layers, the layers of canvas &c. are inclined relatively to the wearing surface, and each layer consists of a number of laminae of canvas or other material, the layers being built up alternately with layers of rubber, guttapercha, &c. The material may consist, for example, of layers comprising five laminµ of canvas a, Fig. 1, proofed with rubber, alternating with layers b of rubber &c., the whole being formed into a block. Slices of any thickness are cut so that the layers of canvas &c. are inclined, preferably at 45‹, to the surface of the material. A backing c of material such as canvas may be applied. Soles for footwear are cut from the composite sheets, the material being so arranged that the layers are inclined forwardly and downwardly. The material may also be made by winding a sheet a, Fig. 2, composed of laminµ of, for instance, canvas, as shown, with rubber b interposed between the windings, and consolidating the whole to form a block, from which sheets are cut at an angle to the layers.
