Abstract
365,662. Vertical steam boilers. SPENCER-HOPWOOD, Ltd., SPENCER, A. L. HITCHCOCK-, 25, Victoria Street, London, and DAVEY, S., Mountrosa, Gaping Lane, Hitchin, Hertfordshire. Oct. 28, 1930, No. 32370. [Class 123 (ii).] Vertical boilers or water heaters of the type having one or more nests of inclined or horizontal water-tubes 3 communicating with the water space on opposite sides of the fire-box 1, are provided with one or more gas outlets 4 in the sides of the fire-box or ashpan additional to or in lieu of a vertical flue 11, together with a baffle or baffles 5 to direct the gases around and between the water-tubes before passing to the outlet. The baffle which may extend from near the grate level to the bottom row of tubes may consist of a superheater or air or water heater. A supplementary boiler or water heater 6 having smoke tubes 7 may be located adjacent to the outlet 4 a cover-plate 12 being provided for the uptake 11. In one modification the outlet is situated below the grate 13. In another, adapted to be oil-fired the uptake is dispensed with two groups of fire tubes being arranged across the water space above the fire-box crown and supplied with waste gases from the outlet 4 or from an engine, furnace or other source. The outlet 4 may be connected to a water heater, superheater or air heater. The fire tubes may be arranged to provide a single or a double pass for the gases across the boiler.
