Abstract

365,645. Automatic guns. AUTOORDNANCE CORPORATION, 302, Broadway, New York, U.S.A. Oct. 24, 1930, No. 31985. Convention date, Oct. 24, 1929. [Classes 92 (ii) and 119.] Relates to automatic guns of the kind operating on the Blish principle, according to which the breech-block is locked by friction which is overcome when the gas pressure falls, as described in Specification 14368/14, [Class 92 (ii), Ordnance &c.], and further to such guns comprising interconnected relatively movable parts, namely the breech-bolt 11, the locking bolt 18, and the actuator 16, as described for example in Specification 161,128, [Class 92 (ii), Ordnance &c.]. The present invention consists in a method of slowing down the rate of fire by adding weight to the actuator 16. In the gun shown, the actuator is elongated to the rear of the broken line x-x shown in Fig. 3 to provide a longitudinal bore to receive one end of the recoil spring 19 the other end of which abuts against a shoulder 23 on a rod 21 that compresses a buffer 27. In an example given for a -45 calibre gun, the breech-bolt weighs 1 lb., the recoil spring has a force of 6 lbs. when the breech is closed, and the actuator weighs from 5 to 10 ounces. When the weight of the actuator was increased from 2¥ to 6¥ ounces, the rate of firing per minute was diminished from 800 to 600.
