Abstract

Boiler water is maintained within the desired limits of alkalinity to prevent corrosion and the calcium and/or magnesium are precipitated as non-adherent sludge, by the addition of a chemical containing a molecularly dehydrated radical which under working conditions is converted into a condition of greater alkali-neutralizing capacity. Such compounds may be metaphosphoric or pyrophosphoric acids, metaphosphates or pyrophosphates, or the corresponding arsenates. Under working conditions, these compounds which have a greater alkali-neutralizing capacity. Deposition of calcium pyrophosphates or metaphosphates is not liable to occur in the feed water owing to their solubility, but conversion into orthophosphate and precipitation as such in the economizer may be retarded by adding cutch, quebracho extract or similar tannin body, citrates, lactates, gallates, alginates or gelatine. Conversion into orthophosphate is a time reaction, and the treated water may be passed into the boiler with sufficient rapidity to prevent deposition in the feed lines. The boiler water may be subjected to a preliminary treatment with lime-soda ash or zeolite to remove part of the scale-forming substances.
