Abstract
6935. Payne, E. E. M., and Staynes, W. H. March 23. Liquids, purifying.-Permanent hardness is removed from water by the addition of tri-sodium phosphate with sufficient caustic soda to combine with the carbonic acid present in the water as such or in the form of acid carbonates. The precipitant may be prepared by mixing common phosphate of soda with an excess of caustic soda, the mixture being dissolved in hot water. The precipitate is run on to a draining or filter bed, and is air-dried or dried in an evaporating-pan. It may be used as manure, or treated with acid to obtain superphospbates or phosphoric acid, from which sodium phosphate for further use may be obtained by treatment with soda-ash. The sodium salts may be replaced by the similar salts of potassium or ammonium.
