Abstract

A denicotined tobacco is obtained by leaching out the tobacco leaves with water or other liquid which does not interfere with fermentation, allowing the liquor to ferment under the action of air, and returning the liquor, preferably after concentration, to the tobacco. The basic products, such as amino bases, formed during fermentation are neutralized continuously or at intervals by means of acids, such as lactic or tartaric acid, or acid-forming substances such as carbohydrates. The fermentation takes place in shallow vessels and may be assisted by the addition of bacterial cultures.
