Abstract
In making acetone and butyl alcohol by the aceto-butylic bacterial fermentation of a sugar-containing must, e.g. a molasses must, from 2 to 20, preferably about 10, kg. of sterilized milk serum are added to each 1001 of must. Milk serum which has been sterilized at about 120 DEG C for about 30 minutes and/or concentrated and then diluted with water to its normal concentration, may be used. Before the milk serum is used, some of its lactose may be extracted, preferably by crystallization, or the serum may be partially fermented by lactic acid producing organisms. Ammonium phosphate may be added to the must as a nutrient.
