Abstract
Solutions of bacteria, retaining the antigenic properties of the bacterial toxins, are obtained by dissolving the bacteria in a solution of the sodium salt of the sulphuric ester of lauryl alcohol. The solution may also contain free sodium hydroxide to increase its solvent action on Gram-positive organisms, according to an example a suspension of bacteria in water, standardized as to its bacterial content, is added to a solution made by mixing equal parts of a 2 per cent solution of sulphonated Lorol and a 3,6 per cent solution of sodium hydroxide, and the mixture is allowed to stand at 42 DEG C. The final solution may be adjusted to pH 7,4 with hydrochloric acid and salt may be added to give a physiologically normal solution. The solution may be sterilized. According to the Provisional Specification the final solution may have a buffer salt, such as sodium acetate or phosphate, added.
