Abstract
Articles of an absorbent nature, e.g. ropes, are marked for identification purposes by impregnating the article or a part thereof with a substance capable of rendering it fluorescent, or, if fluorescent substances are normally present in the article, with a substance having a fluorescence different in degree or character from that of such normally present substances. One or more yarns of a rope, for example, may be impregnated with the sodium salt of the sulphonic acid of methylated Primuline base; such yarns are inconspicuous among the other yarns in the rope, but stand out with a whitish-yellow colour under the action of ultra-violet rays in a dark room. Other dyes which may be used for the same purpose are Chlorazol fast yellow 5GK, Chrysophenine G, Primuline, Auramine, and Rhodamine B. The fluorescent material may be mixed with the oil or grease which is applied to the fibre in the manufacture of the yarn, and may be more, or less, fluorescent than the oil or grease itself, so that the treated yarns fluoresce distinctively when submitted to ultra-violet light.
