Abstract

699,299. Applications of luminescence. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and HUSBANDS, T. G. Oct. 8, 1951 [Oct. 7, 1950], No. 24524/50. Class 39(i) A marking which will fluoresce when irradiated by radiation of a frequency higher than that of visible light, e.g. ultra violet light but which is not readily visible in normal daylight or artificial light, is made on a shoe part to assist a shoe-making operation such as stitching, punching, positioning one upper part relatively to another or the like; and the operation is carried out while the marking is fluorescing. Removal of marks imperfectly covered in the operation with possible damage to the shoe part is thus unnecessary. The marking may be made by a fluorescent ink i.e. a solution of a fluorescent material or a liquid having fluorescent material in suspension in it, or the marking may be provided by forming a fluorescent material in situ by chemical reaction.
