[Class 123 (i).] Water is softened by treatment first with alkaline boiler water or boiler sludge water and then with tri-sodium phosphate or other alkaline-reacting alkali-phosphate. Water to be treated from a vessel n passes with boiler sludge water from a pipe k down a tube b in a cylindrical vessel a. Sludge settles on the base c and the water after passing through a filter e is treated with trisodium phosphate solution prepared in a vessel l and supplied through a regulating device m and a distributer p. The water passes finally through a filter f to an outlet pipe g. Phosphate solution may be passed directly to the pipe g through a pipe h. It is stated that, if excess alkaline phosphate is used, the treated water will convert scale present in a boiler into a powdery sludge, which can be pumped away.
