405,368. Softening water. CHEMISCHE FABRIK BUDENHEIM AKT.-GES., Mainz, Germany. Sept. 3, 1932, No. 24586. Convention date, Sept. 3, 1931. [Class 46.] In softening water by treatment with alkali phosphate the precipitation of the hardening constituents is caused to take place in a non- heated pipe system, preferably provided with windings and bands, through which the water is passed at such speed that turbulent currents and eddies are formed. The pipe system may be provided with one or more constrictions, which may, if desired, be capable of regulation. With the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, crude water supplied through the pipe b is heated in the cascade heater by steam supplied from the boiler m through the pipe c and mixed with alkaline blow-down water supplied through the pipe d. The alkaline reagent reacts with the hardening constituents in the water as the latter passes through the first portion of a pipe system f, and softening is completed in the later portion by a solution of alkali phosphate supplied through a funnel h from a tank g. The water is then passed through a filter i and is subsequently supplied to the boiler from a collecting box k by a pump l. In modified apparatus the pipe system is under a pressure corresponding to that of the boiler. The crude water and the blow-down water are delivered by separate pumps to a pipe which is fitted with a mixing nozzle receiving steam from the boiler. The alkali phosphate is delivered to the pipe system by a third pump.
