1282601 Treating waste water WESTERN MECHANICAL Inc 31 Oct 1969 [12 Nov 1968 (2)] 53502/69 Heading C1C Waste water, e.g. that derived from sewage after primary treatment by grinding and settling is fed by gravity or pump 17 into a sealed tank 10 and is treated by forcing oxygen or air and sulphur dioxide from a source 22 through a perforated manifold pipe 21. The pH of the effluent from tank 10 is monitored by a meter 24 which may automatically control a valve 23 in the line for the input of sulphur dioxide. The effluent subsequently flows into a further tank 11 containing a tray supporting pieces of scrap iron and is further subjected to treatment with oxygen and sulphur dioxide supplied by perforated manifold pipe 30. Tanks 10, 11 have towers 20, 39 for the collection of excess oxygen and sulphur dioxide for recycling. The water from tank 11 is passed through a conduit 36 which includes a device 37 for the metered supply of alum and a supply 38 of an alkaline substance, e.g. lime, and is discharged into a tank 42 for further oxygenation or aeration after being thoroughly mixed in a pump 40. The pH of the effluent leaving tank 42 is monitored by a meter 41 which may control the addition of the alkaline material from supply 38. Settling of the waste water occurs in two tanks 13 connected in series and provided with baffles 46, the resulting sludge is collected in tank 15 and the water is treated in one of a pair of parallel filters 14 prior to discharge.
