361,566. Detecting subaqueous sounds ; diaphragms. SUBMARINE SIGNAL CO., 160, State Street, Boston, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Clement, I. C. ; Morgan Avenue, Greenwood, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) Oct. 31, 1930, No. 32766. Convention date, Oct. 31, 1929. [Class 118 (ii).] Subaqueous sound-receiving apparatus is mounted in a perforation in the skin of a ship and has a rubber diaphragm held between clamping members, a material harder than rubber being inserted in the diaphragm in the portion between the clamping members to prevent cold flow of the rubber from between the members. A ring 2 is secured to the skin 1 of a ship by welding and riveting and supports a shell 21 containing a microphone 17 and diaphragm 11. The shell 21 is spaced from the ring 2 by a layer of sound - insulating material 3 and is fastened by a screwed collar 8 bearing against insulating and clamping rings 6, 7. The diaphragm 11 is made of soft rubber and is secured in place by clamping members 16, 31, an insertion 15 of hard fibrous material being moulded in the diaphragm. The microphone 17 is connected to the diaphragm 11 by a stem 18.
