Abstract

361,514. Optical comparators. MALCOLM, R. C., 12, Hungerford Street, Calcutta, India. Oct. 6, 1930, No. 29848. [Class 97 (i).] Optical apparatus for comparing objects such as bullets, fingerprints, coins, &c. comprises holders for the objects, and an optical system of fixed optical length consisting of an objective for each object and an optical train whereby the individual images of the objects are formed in juxtaposition to be observed or photographed. In the form shown, the objects are arranged at distances from the objectives equal to twice the focal length of the latter and the images are therefore also at a distance of 2/ from the objectives. The apparatus is mounted in a casing 1 which can be adjusted about pivots 2, 3 and can also be adjusted along slots 12, 13. The objectives 14, 15 have parallel axes and are arranged in front of pentaprisms 16, 17 by which the light is directed on to the centre prism combination 18 which includes a biprism 55. The eyepiece 19 may be provided with a rotary disc 21 containing colour filters and with a fitting 22 for the attachment of a microscope or camera. Holders 23, 24 for the objects to be compared are disposed in front of the objectives and are arranged to be rotatable together at the same speed about vertical axes by means of a belt &c. 31. In front of the holders 23, 24 are arranged additional holders 25, 26 in which the objects are mounted when it is desired to rotate them about horizontal axes, this rotation being effected by a belt &c. 39. The objects are illuminated by lamps 48, 49 mounted on universally-jointed supports 50, 51. In a modification the pentaprisms are dispensed with, the objectives being mounted coaxially at opposite ends of the casing 1.
