Abstract

Nitric acid is concentrated by exposing a downflowing mixture of weak acid and a dehydrating agent, such as sulphuric acid, in a fractionating column or tower to a counter-current of weak nitric acid vapour resulting from the distillation of the effluent collected at the base of the column, which is heated in such a manner that the vapours generated pass a counter-current to the effluent while it is undergoing distillation. The heating of the effluent may be carried out in any suitable manner, avoiding the direct introduction of heated gases or steam.
