Abstract

Nitrogen-containing cellulose ethers are produced by treating cellulose or a derivative thereof with epichlorhydrin in the absence of alkalies to obtain a chlorine-containing derivative and thereafter reacting with a tertiary amine. The products have an affinity towards cotton and acid wool dyestuffs. The cellulose, which may have been subjected to partial esterification or etherification is caused to react with the epichlorhydrin in the presence of a suitable catalyst, such as sulphuric acid or boric acid, or an ester thereof such as the oxyalkyl ester. In examples, (1) mercerized cotton yarn is reacted with epichlorhydrin and sulphuric acid under pressure, (2) and (3) partially acetylated cellulose is treated with epichlorhydrin and boric acid, (4) acetone soluble cellulose acetate is treated with epichlorhydrin and boric acid. The product of example (4) may be worked up into artificial filaments or films which are capable of undergoing further reaction. (5) The product of any of the first three examples is heated on the water bath with pyridine or di-methylaniline. (6) acetyl-cellulose-chlorhydrin ether in the form of threads is heated with a solution of trimethylamine in toluene. (7) The yarn obtained as in examples (5) or (6) is dyed with an acid wool dyestuff in the presence of sulphuric or acetic acid. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers also to the treatment of the halogen-containing cellulose derivatives with ammonia or derivatives thereof, such as mono- and di-methylamine or ethylamine, benzylamine, dibenzylamine, hexahydroaniline, piperidine, diethylethylene-diamine, piperazine, guanidine and aniline, and also with alcohol, phenols, thiophenols, mercaptans, albumins. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
