Abstract
360,521. Railway vehicle axles. RINGFEDER GES., Verdingen, Niederrhein, and KREISSIG, E. Linn, Krefeld, both in Germany. Aug. 18, 1930, No. 24720. [Class 103 (vi).] A hollow shaft, particularly a railway vehicle axle, is subjected to an initial axial compressive stress so that the ratio of tensile and compressive stresses set up in use correspond with the ratio of the durability strengths of the material under tension and compression, by reducing the tensile and increasing the compressive stresses. In addition to the bending stresses, torsional stresses are also favourably influenced. The initial compression may be by a tensioned tube or rod 2, which may be of a different material, and be secured at its ends 3 to the hollow axle 1 by screws or by welding. Alternatively the axial compression may be produced by external forces acting on shoulders on, or on the ends of the shaft.
