Abstract

359,186. Mechanical make-and-break switches. FROGGATT, R. E., 134, Orchard Road, Erdington, Birmingham. Oct. 8, 1930, No. 30107. [Class 38 (v).] Internal - combustion valves are each fitted with a pair of e 1 e c tromagnets, one of which serves for opening, and the other for closing the valve, the magnets being deenergized by short - circuiting them, the time when this occurs being varied by adjustment of a rotary switch. Fig. 1 indicates valves a, b fitted with solenoid plungers d, each subject to the action of a pair of windings. The windings f, h serve to open, and the windings e, g close the valves. Current is supplied from a battery i to the coils in the proper sequence by a rotary switch fitted with short segments j, i and long segments k, m connected up as shown, the windings being de-energized by being short-circuited by brushes n. The flow of current when this occurs is restricted by forming the brushes n with a high resistance in the transverse direction ; or a resistance 2 may be inserted. In a modification, the two windings of a valve are arranged in series, actuation of the plunger being effected at each reversal of current. For adjusting the timing of the valves, the ends of the switch segments, j .. m are inclined as shown in Fig. 5, and the brushes n are adjusted axially to the switch. The segments j m are coupled to a metal ring p at one end of the switch, and the segments k, l are coupled to a metal bush q, a brush r contacting with the ring p being connected to the battery.
