Abstract
358,614. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Foulke, T. E. ; 410, 8th Street, Hoboken, New Jersey, U.S.A.) July 21, 1930, No. 21956. Convention date, July 27, 1929. (Class 39 (i).] A discharge tube which may be used as a polarity indicator or rectifier contains two electrodes, the anode 4 being concealed within the cathode 5 so that when the tube is inserted in a holder with correct connections the cathode glow is visible, but no glow can be seen if the connections are incorrect. The electrode 5 is made of or coated with a material of low work function so that a discharge passes more readily when the connections are correctly made. The electrode 5 may be of nickel, iron, nickel-plated iron, &c., and may be coated with an alkali or alkaline-earth metal or compound such as potassium, barium, potassium, hydroxide, barium carbonate, &c., which may be treated in any usual way. A small piece of magnesium or aluminium 7 is attached to the electrode 5 which when vaporized cleans up undesired gases and promotes activation of the coating on the electrode 5. A resistance 9 of several thousand ohms is inserted in the cathode lead. Specification 138,642, [Class 39 (i), Electric lamps, Arc &c.], is referred to.
