[Class 135.] A valve controlling the supply of gas to a water heater is actuated by gas pressure under the control of an auxiliary valve actuated by the drop of pressure in the water supply pipe occasioned by opening a hot water draw-off tap, and of a thermally actuated auxiliary valve adapted to close the conduit supplying the lighter burner in the event of the burner being extinguished. The main gas valve 38 controlling the connection between the main gas supply pipe 34 and the pipe 40 leading to the burner is carried by a spring-loaded diaphragm 36. The two sides of the diaphragm are connected by conduits 31, 13 and 37, 14 with the two sides of the control valve 9. The valve 9 is carried by a hollow spindle 8 supported by a pair of diaphragms 6, 7, and is held in the open position when no water is flowing by springs 21. The water supply enters through a branch 4 and passes through a Venturi pipe 5, throttled by a needle 18 on the valve spindle, to the heater. When water is flowing the reduced pressure at the Venturi neck is transmitted through the radial and axial passages 20, 19 to the chamber 2, thus causing the control, valve to close. If the pilot burner is alight pressure in the chambers 35 and 11 is vented through pipe 37, passages 14, 16, 17, pipe 41 and pilot burner, thus allowing the main valve to open. The outlet from the pipe 41 is controlled by a valve 48 having an axial passage 44 leading to a pilot burner 46 and actuated by a thermal member 47 supported by arms 48. In a modification the control valve and the actuating diaphragms are arranged in separate casings and are coupled together by a lever.
