Abstract

357,731. Compensating for wear in brakes. NEVATT, C. G., Sunnyside, Cavendish Road, Henleaze, and KINGSTON, E. G., Clare Street House, both in Bristol. Aug. 20, 1930, No. 24903. [Class 103 (i).] An automatic slack-adjusting device for vehicle brakes comprises an eccentric 12 supported on a shaft 11 and connected to the brakes by a link 16, an annular wedge-member 18 freely mounted on the eccentric, a ring 19 frictionally engaging the concentric outer surface of the wedge-member 18, a stop 21 carried by or operatively connected to the ring 19, and a brake pedal 10 carrying a pawl 14 engaging a rack secured to the eccentric. The stop 21 moves between two fixed stops 23, 24 corresponding respectively to the normal " off " and " on " positions of the brake. In operation when the pedal is depressed the parts 12, 18, 19 move together until the stops 21, 24 engage. If the clearance is greater than normal the eccentric is further rotated and moves by itself until the rack 13 engages a projection 22 on the wedge-member 18 when the two parts 12, 18 rotate together. On release of the brake the part 18 is held by friction with the ring 19 until the eccentric wedges itself to the part 18 and causes the three parts to rotate back together until stopped by the lug 23. A spring 27 returns the pedal into engagement with a fixed stop 26.
