Abstract

[Class 38 (ii).] In a transformer regulated by tapping switches A<1> .. D<1> associated with a centre-tapped a u t o - transformer coil 2 to enable voltage values intermediate those of adjacent tappings to be obtained, an additional switch E is provided whereby, during the regulating stages in which only one end of the coil 2 is connected to the main transformer, the part of the coil between that end and the centre point is short-circuited thus relieving the coil of the full load current and at the same time leaving only half of the voltage of the coil to be dealt with by the switch. The necessary switching sequence may be obtained by using contactor type switches operated by cams on a common shaft, by a drum controller, Fig. 3 (not shown), or by a straight line face plate type of switch, Fig. 4 (not shown). In the case of small transformers of low voltage, a tapped resistance may be substituted for the autotransformer 2.
