Abstract

500,763. Transformers ; automatic control systems. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 18, 1938, No. 1686. Convention date, Jan. 21, 1937. [Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] Electromotive force.-In an on-load transformer tap changing arrangement comprising a tapped winding 4 with which engages a pair of contact circuits 8, 9 and a selector switch 11, a circuit breaker 15 is connected between the circuits 8, 9 to relieve the switch 11 of the duty of breaking the load current. To effect tap change, the switch 11 is moved to break connection between one of the circuits (9 e.g.) and the line 5, the circuit remaining completed through the circuit breaker 15. The circuit breaker is then opened and the tap connection 9 to the transformer can then be moved to the next tapping after which the circuit breaker is closed and the switch 11 returned to normal position. A similar sequence is gone through to move the tap connection of the circuit 8 to the same tap position. Interlinked chokes 21 are provided to reduce the circulating current when the circuits 8, 9 are connected to different taps. The tap adjusting mechanism 6, the switch 11 and the circuit breaker 15 may be mechanically coupled and operated by a reversible capacitor motor 20, under the control of a contact making voltmeter 22.
