Abstract

357,614. Hand-wheels. SMALE, W. J., 1A, Frogmore Avenue, and HOWELL, L. F., 1, Upton Terrace, St. Thomas, both in Swansea. May 28, 1930, No. 16422. [Class 80 (iv).] In motor-vehicle steering-wheels in which the rim can be shifted forward to a position eccentric to the boss, the spokes are arranged to be angularly movable about the boss. One spoke comprises a tubular part 27, which is secured by studs 28 in a slot in the rim 24 and telescopically receives a flat bar 30 having an eye 32 secured to the boss 26 and provided with a single notch 36. The other telescopic spokes comprise tubular parts 38, 38A, pivoted respectively at 42, 40 to the rim, and bars 44, 44A having eyes 48, 48A each provided respectively with two notches 50, 52 and 50A, 52A. The eyes 48, 48A are secured by a nut 58 for rotation on a reduced part 56 of the boss 26. A locking- trigger 66, mounted on a screw 62 and pressed by a spring 64, lies in a groove in the boss 26 and in aligned notches in the spoke-eyes, unless withdrawn by a finger-piece extension 70. When the wheel is in the normal position, Fig. 1, the trigger engages the notches 36, 52, 52A, but on releasing it and pushing the wheel forward, as shown in Fig. 2, it snaps into the notches 36, 50, 50A.
