Abstract

457,660. Motor-vehicle steering-gear. BLUEMEL BROS., Ltd., Wolston, near Coventry, and BLUEMEL, F. W., Cannon Hill, Kenilworth Road, Coventry, Warwickshire. May 30, 1935, No. 15712. [Class 79 (v)] In order to provide for axial adj ustment of the steering hand wheel, the upper end of the steering shaft 10 above a bearing 12 is provided with a tubular portion or member 14 into which a short shaft 19 on the steering wheel 17 slides I locking means being provided for securing the wheel in any desired position. The part 14 may be integral with the shaft 10, but in the construction shown is formed as a separate member splined on the shaft 10 and secured thereto by a pin 16. The member 14 is also splined on the wheel shaft 19 and is split at 23, being clamped on the shaft 19 by a bolt 24 and cam lever 25, 26 as described in Specification 417,418, so that the shaft 19 can be readily released for adjustment by moving the lever 25 to the position shown in broken lines in Fig. 2. The shaft 19 is hidden from view by a telescopic spring coil or sheath 29, or two telescoping tubes may be used. The axial movement of the wheel shaft in the member 14 is limited by a screw 21 engaging a slot 22 in the shaft. The steering shaft 10 is enclosed in the usual stationary column 11. The member 14 may be split also at its lower end which would then be clamped on the shaft 10 by a bolt.
