Abstract
A process for refining metals and alloys consists in passing iodine vapour through the molten metal or alloy. Refining material, comprising an iodide or iodides, for example, potassium or barium iodide or a mixture of the two in the proportion of 1-2 parts of iodide to 1000 parts of molten metal, is placed in or applied to the vessel containing the metal whereupon the iodide is decomposed and free iodine passes through the metal. In foundry work for making steel castings, cast iron, &c., the refining material may be applied at the bottom of the ladle whilst in casting steel ingots it may be applied at the bottom of the mould and also to the walls in conjunction with any usual protective coating.
