357,390. Liquid flow indicators. HOVEMAN, W. A. and HOVEMAN, F. C., 146A, Queen Victoria Street, London. Oct. 9, 1930, No. 30309. [Class 97 (ii).] Apparatus for indicating the rate of flow of : liquid comprise a visible indicator adapted to be carried with the liquid stream and means to allow the indicator to move out of the path of the liquid after a predetermined travel therein so that i may subsequently return to a posi tion for starting a fresh indication. The Figure shows the application of the invention to apparatus for adding alumina to water in proportion to the rate of flow. The inlet end of a Venturi tube 1 in the main pipe 2 is connected by a pipe 4 to the container 3 for alumina which is connected to the throat of the Venturi tube by a pipe 5. A block 15 traversed by channels 16, 17, 18 as shown is interposed in the pipe 4. A celluloid or glass capillary tube 9, 10 of U-shape is connected to the ends of the channels 17, 18 respectively by cup-shaped joints 21. A cock 19 is provided in the channel 16. When the cock is open the flow is through the channel 16, but when closed the flow is through the capillary tube 19, a drop of mercury 29 being carried with the stream and indicating the rate of flow by its movement across the scale 27. When the mercury reaches the cup 21 it is pushed aside from the stream and returns to the bottom of the U -tube only when the cock 19 is again opened. The tube may be of restricted diameter at the bottom in order to bring the mercury quickly into motion. Where the flow through the pipe 4 is too great to pass through the capillary tube, the cock 19 may be arranged even in the closed position to byepass a certain definite proportion of the stream.
