[Class 78 (i).] A rotarv elevator for dealing with material in bulk consists of a rotating annular structure having a series of pockets open only towards the inside, that is, towards the horizontal axis on which the elevator r rotates, the pockets being closed during their upward movement by a member, such as a band, travelling at the same rate. In the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 4, in connection with the unloading of ships, material is brought from the hold by conveyers 14 and is discharged through hoppers 37, 36 into the pockets 20 of the elevator, and this material is raised by the elevator and discharged through the hopper 40 on to the discharge conveyer 41. The elevator consists of an annular structure forming a number of pockets 20 open only on their inside, the whole structure being rotated continuously by gearing, mounted on supporting rollers 17 and retained in position by side guiding rollers 25. To prevent discharge of the loose material from the pockets during their upward movement, the open faces are closed by an endless flexible belt which runs over pulleys 47, 48 at its ends and is held up against the moving inner run of the elevator by spring-pressed rollers 50. The belt is driven from the motor 35 at the same speed as the elevator.
