356,997. Peeling and pulping fruit. ROWAN, W. W., Prome, Glenpatriok Road, Elderslie, Renfrewshire. Nov. 10, 1930, No. 33760. [Class 28 (ii).] In a machine for removing the rind or skin from fruit, and pulping the fruit, e.g. for the manufacture of marmalade, the fruit is pushed on to four vertically arranged knives and is thereby practically quartered, the quarters falling on to shoots which lead them to pulping rollers associated with peeling knives. As shown, the oranges are placed in apertures in an endless belt S which positions each one beneath a pusher I, adjustably carried on a reciprocating crosshead G, which pushes them between four triangular knives J which completely sever the orange into two halves which are themselves nearly subdivided into quarters. The two halves move over the shoots O and are engaged by the spiked rollers L which press them against rollers M having recesses and circumferential grooves to receive and hold the pulp whilst the peel is stripped off by knives N and is directed by shoots P to discharge grids Q. The pulp is ejected from the grooves of the rollers M by scrapers M<3>. When harder fruit than usual is being treated, the action of the rollers L is assisted by cranked members i on shafts k which are oscillated by the engagement of pinions thereon with racks connected to rods p, returned by springs t, and actuated by a cam on the shaft c engaging a protuberance on the lever q.
